Pros & Cons of Dental Implants

As a long-term solution to tooth loss, dental implant technology has revolutionized the field of replacement teeth. Although research has continually shown that dental implants are the best long-term solution for missing teeth, it’s essential to know all the facts before jumping into something.

Dr. Tokunaga knows that every surgery has advantages and disadvantages, so weighing your pros and cons will help you make the best decision for the desired outcome.

Cons:

While there are a few risks associated with dental implants, and no procedure is suitable for everyone, the risks are relatively mild. Some of the disadvantages include:

  • Dental implants are not always the most cost-effective solution to tooth loss. Although they are more expensive than dentures, nothing gives you as much comfort and confidence as something that looks and feels exactly like your natural teeth.
  • There are specific requirements that you must meet to qualify for dental implants. If you’ve experienced significant bone loss, there may not be enough bone for the implant to be successful. You must also be healthy enough to recover from the surgery fully.
  • The procedure can also be very lengthy, and steps must be taken before fitting the implant anchor. You must wait several months while the site heals and the surrounding bone regrows. The final stage is where the artificial tooth will be attached to the implant anchor.

Pros:

While there are some downsides, the advantages of dental implants far outweigh the disadvantages:

  • Your new dental implants will look, fit, and feel like natural teeth. Since they will be anchored in your bone just like your natural teeth, they will be just as strong. Once the implant is in place, you’ll hardly be able to tell the difference between your reel teeth and your replacement tooth.
  • You’ll be able to eat and chew easily without any dietary restrictions!
  • They’re easy to take care of! To keep them clean, simply brush and floss like normal, but be sure to get regular dental check-ups and eat a healthy diet to maintain bone health.
  • Implants are designed to be a long-lasting tooth replacement solution. Crowns may need to be replaced every 10-15 years, but if you look after the implants, they can last a lifetime.
