Periodontal Therapy

Are your gums red and swollen, or bleed every time you brush your teeth? Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, affects millions, but how to reverse it still remains a mystery to many. At Dr. Tokunaga's Arlington Heights office, our focus is to educate patients about the condition, its causes, and how it can be effectively treated and managed.
What is Periodontal Disease?
The problem begins with plaque buildup around and below your gum line that results in inflammation and irritation. If left untreated, this buildup turns into tartar, which causes further damage to your gums, bone, and connective tissue that hold your teeth securely in place. While maintaining excellent oral hygiene at home is the primary preventative measure, other factors like genetics, smoking, and health conditions like diabetes can also increase your risk.

PERIODONTAL TREATMENT OPTIONS
Dr. Tokunaga’s office focuses on early treatment. We work to provide a personalized plan specifically designed to treat your current condition.
- Scaling and Root Planing: A deep cleaning procedure to remove plaque and tartar from beneath the gums and smooth root surfaces to promote healing.
- Surgical Debridement: For advanced periodontal disease, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove infected gum tissue and promote healthier tissue regeneration.
- Regular Cleanings: Normally scheduled every 3 to 4 months or as instructed by your hygienist, these cleanings help maintain gum health and prevent bacterial buildup.
- Targeted Antibiotic Therapy: Specialized antibiotic treatments are used to reduce bacterial presence and inflammation in affected areas.
Daily Habits for Better Gum Health
If you want a healthy mouth, it starts at home. We recommend gently brushing your teeth and gums twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid irritation. Daily flossing, or use of a water flosser to miss areas that brushing and flossing might miss, is essential to remove plaque and food debris between your teeth and on your gum line. Finally, routine dental check-ups are critical in monitoring your gum health. These check-ups help detect potential issues early and ensure ongoing gum health and stability.
With the combination of diligent at-home care and professional treatments, periodontal disease can be effectively managed, stabilized, and prevented. Together, let's maintain your beautiful, healthy smile.
