Is Diet Important?

The relationship between diet and oral health has been widely investigated in the dental literature, and it is well-established that a healthy diet can positively impact your oral health. Nutrients present in food are essential for maintaining and repairing oral tissues, and deficiencies in certain nutrients can increase the risk of oral diseases.

For instance, inadequate calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus intake can lead to weakened tooth enamel and an increased risk of dental caries (cavities). Likewise, insufficient levels of vitamin C, vitamin A, and zinc can impair the immune system's ability to fight oral infections and promote the healing of oral tissues, leading to periodontal disease and delayed wound healing.

Consuming a diet high in fermentable carbohydrates (such as sugar and refined carbohydrates) can create an acidic environment in the mouth, promoting the growth of acid-producing bacteria that contribute to the development of dental caries. On the other hand, a diet low in fermentable carbohydrates and high in fiber can help promote salivary flow and reduce the risk of dental caries.

A diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy products can help support optimal oral health.
