Are You Brushing Too Hard?
January 1, 2023 in General
Have you been diligently brushing and flossing but have noticed tooth sensitivity or a change in your gumline? Brushing your teeth too hard while faithfully keeping up good habits is possible. A receding gumline could signify that you might be too enthusiastic about your oral hygiene.
How is Brushing Too Hard Harmful?
Premature Wear and Tear: Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body; however, aggressive brushing could slowly erode the external layers. Once there is significant wear, you may experience increased teeth sensitivity or an increased risk of decay.
Gum Recession: When you brush too hard, the tissues surrounding your teeth recede, affecting your smile and possibly endangering your teeth. Once a tooth’s root is exposed, it is much more susceptible to outside stimuli and more prone to decay due to the lack of protective enamel.
How Should I Be Brushing?
If you notice that the bristles of your toothbrush become frayed quickly, or if your gums are sore after you brush, there’s a fair chance that you are using too much pressure while brushing. Here are a few good tips to follow to ensure you’re minimizing the wear and tear on your teeth and gums:
- Ensure you are using a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Use short, circular strokes against your teeth while holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle
- You should be able to feel the bristles of the toothbrush against your gums, but never smash them down
- If you find it difficult not to apply too much pressure, try using your non-dominant hand
- When using an electric toothbrush, do not press hard; just ensure contact with your teeth
