Frequently Asked Questions
You should feel comfortable asking questions about your dental care, whether you're coming in for a cleaning, thinking about changing your smile, or trying to figure out a more complicated dental problem.
Dr. Tokunaga believes the best treatment starts with a good conversation. Here are answers to some of the questions patients often have before visiting our Arlington Heights office.
Questions Patients Often Ask
Your first visit gives Dr. Tokunaga a chance to get to know you and understand what brings you in. He'll ask about your dental and medical history, any problems you've been having, and anything you would like to change.
From there, your exam may include X-rays, photos, and a closer look at your teeth, gums, bite, and the way everything works together. Once Dr. Tokunaga has the full picture, he can explain what he sees and talk through your options.
No. You should have time to think through your options and ask questions before moving ahead with treatment. Dr. Tokunaga will explain what he's seeing, what he recommends, and why.
If you're looking at a larger treatment plan, it may also be possible to break it into steps instead of doing everything at once.
Yes. Dental cleanings and regular checkups are part of the care we provide. Dr. Tokunaga uses these visits to see how your teeth and gums are doing and whether anything needs attention.
Before you leave, we'll let you know when it makes sense to come back.
That depends on what you'd like to change. Dr. Tokunaga offers veneers, bonding, crowns, professional whitening, and other cosmetic treatment options.
For some patients, a small change can make a big difference. Others may need a combination of treatments. Dr. Tokunaga can show you what your options are and talk through what would work best for your smile.
These treatments can address some of the same cosmetic concerns, but they don't do the same job.
Bonding works well for smaller chips, gaps, worn edges, or areas of discoloration. Dental veneers are used when you want to instantly change the color, shape, size, or spacing of your teeth. A thin layer of tooth-colored material is placed over the front of a tooth or set of teeth. A crown covers more of the tooth and is used when your tooth needs additional strength or protection.
Dr. Tokunaga will show you what is happening with the tooth and explain which options make sense before you decide.
There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for missing teeth. Dr. Tokunaga will look at the health of your teeth, gums, and bone. He will also examine your bite and the location of the missing tooth before recommending a tooth replacement option.
Yes. Dr. Tokunaga provides periodontal care, from treatment for gum disease to gum grafting and laser periodontal services.
Receding, swollen, tender, or bleeding gums are worth having checked. Gum problems can progress without much discomfort at first, so an exam can help determine what is happening and whether treatment is needed.
Yes. Dr. Tokunaga performs several surgical procedures in the office, including tooth removal, dental implants, gum grafting, bone grafting, sinus lifts, and periodontal procedures.
If surgery may be part of your treatment, he'll explain what's involved and why he's recommending it before anything is scheduled.
Full-mouth reconstruction may be recommended when several teeth or areas of the mouth need attention at the same time.
Maybe you've had a lot of dental work over the years, or several teeth are showing wear, damage, or other problems. Instead of treating each one on its own, Dr. Tokunaga can look at how everything fits together and plan from there.
Dr. Tokunaga plans the treatment around what needs to be repaired and what matters most to you.
Please tell us. You won't be the first person who has felt that way.
DR. TOKUNAGA AND HIS TEAM CAREFULLY EXPLAIN EACH STEP AND WELCOME YOUR QUESTIONS.
Many patients find that knowing what to expect makes an appointment much easier. If there is something that would help you feel more comfortable, let the team know when you schedule or when you arrive.
